Boyle, Robert (1627-1691)

Scientist

Boyle was born on 25 January 1627 at Lismore Castle. He was educated at Eton and graduated as a philosopher and scientist. He travelled extensively on the continent and returned to London in 1668 where he became a founder member of the Royal Society. He is most celebrated for experiments relating to air, in particular 'Boyle's Law', which states that the volume of air at a constant temperature, varies inversely to the pressure applied to it. He was a religious man and commissioned Bedell's Irish Bible, published in 1686. He never married and died in London in 1691.
