1.  Irish Regiments in World War 1
Note: Waterford County Museum does not hold the records for any of the Irish Regiments that served in World War 1. Due to the pressures of time on our voluntary staff, the museum is not in a position to answer queries about specific soldiers. We have prepared a short guide to help genealogists find their military ancestors. The article is called Tracing Your Irish Military Ancestors.

If you do not have the time or expertise to research your military ancestors you should consider using a professional military researcher. Members of the museum have in the past used the services of Richard Moles and found him to be a most efficient and trustworthy researcher.

The Irish infantry regiments of the British Army whose territorial and recruiting affiliations lay in the new Irish Free State(above) were disbanded in 1922. These were The Royal Irish Regiment (formerly 18th Regiment of Foot); The Connaught Rangers (formerly 88th Regiment of Foot and 94th Regiment of Foot); The Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians) (formerly 100th Regiment of Foot and 109th Regiment of Foot); The Royal Munster Fusiliers (formerly 101st Regiment of Foot and 104th Regiment of Foot); and The Royal Dublin Fusiliers (formerly 102nd Regiment of Foot and 103rd Regiment of Foot).

5.  Kilmacthomas Union: The Administration of Poor Law in a County Waterford Workhouse 1851-1872
This paper examines Kilmacthomas Union in the period 1851 to 1872, presenting an opportunity to study the workings of the poor law administration outside the period of the famine. The principal argument of this article will centre on the implementation of the poor law and the way in which the workhouse moved from a narrow workhouse base to becoming the major provider of the statutory social services which came about as a direct result of the legislative changes in the poor law in the period following the famine.
7.  Rebellion in Wartime Ireland – Easter 1916
For many in Ireland, as well as those who look to Ireland as the mother country, Easter 1916 is a date that has symbolic significance, however, how many people have a good understanding of these events? I venture to say 'very little do', save to say the folklore they have grown up with and the stories of Patrick Pearse, Thomas Clarke, James Connolly and other leaders from that period. In this article, I hope to bring a better understanding of how people from this period viewed what was happening in Ireland from ordinary people to Augustine Birrell who was Ireland's Chief Secretary, and how these events impacted on them.
9.  The Cruise Of The Jacknell
On April 12th 1867 a ship called 'Jacknell' left New York bound for Ireland. The men on board hoped to assist in a Fenian rising. These Fenians were captured as the waded ashore at Helvick outside Dungarvan. In this article we reproduce part of a book that recorded the exploits of the 'Jacknell' and her crew. The book is called 'The Dock And The Scaffold' and was published in Dublin by A. M. Sullivan, Abbey Street in 1868. The first part of the book concerns itself with the 'Manchester Tragedy' when Three Fenians were hung after being tried for attempting to help Thomas Kelly(a leading Fenian), escape from a prison van in Manchester. The second part of the book is called 'The Cruise Of The Jacknell' and is reproduced here in it's entirety with original illustrations.

6.  The Irish War of Independence 1919 - 21
After the Easter Rising in 1916 the Irish Volunteers were regrouped and became known as the Irish Republican Army - I.R.A. Sinn Féin led by Arthur Griffith and Eamon De Valera controlled the I.R.A. After the General Election of 1918 Sinn Féin won 73 of the 105 seats but they refused to attend the House of Commons. They established their own parliament - Dáil Eireann. In 1919 the British government banned Dáil Eireann and Sinn Féin.

The War of Independence is said to have begun at an ambush at Soloheadbeg in Co. Tipperary in 1919. The war was mostly confined to the Munster area and Dublin. The republicans carried out ambushes with groups of men known as the 'Flying Columns'. Auxiliary police forces were sent to Ireland known as the Black and Tans and the Auxiliaries. The Black and Tans had a bad reputation and were a largely undisciplined force.

8.  The Hay Plan & Conscription In Ireland During WW1 - Page 1
British rule in Ireland did not end with the Easter Rising of 1916 as many people believe but an event that occurred two years later, what we now call the Conscription Crisis.
Alcock, Rev. James (1805-1893)
10.  Alcock, Rev. James (1805-1893)
A Church of Ireland minister in Ring, he was for 60 years the faithful and zealous vicar of the parish for the above period. During the scourge of the Famine and Cholera he proved himself the generous friend, the wise guide and councillor of the sick, distressed and afflicted of all classes and creeds.
