Donal Whelan, a native of Abbeyside, Dungarvan, achieved great distinction on the hurling fields throughout the country. He was one of the heroes of the glory years for Waterford when the county contested the All-Ireland senior finals in 1957, '59, and '63. He won his All-Ireland medal in 1959 having defeated Kilkenny in a replay. He also represented Munster in the Railway Cup, played on a number of Rest of Ireland selections and played with U.C.D. in the Fitzgibbon Cup. He represented Waterford on the Munster Council for almost twenty years.

He made headlines when he was arrested on board the Cypriot registered vessel Claudia. Approximately 5 tons of arms and ammunition were found on board. These were destined for the I.R.A. He received a suspended seven year prision sentence for his involvement.
