Bishop James Vincent Cleary

Bishop James Vincent Cleary photographed at Stabilmento's Studio, Rome. Born in Dungarvan on 18th of September 1829. His parents were Thomas Cleary, a merchant and shipowner of Main Street, Dungarvan and Margaret O'Brien. James Vincent was educated at Salamanca and Rome. After his ordination in 1851, he obtained a degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology in 1862. He returned to Ireland where he was appointed Professor of Dogmatic Theology and Biblical Exposition at Saint John's College, Waterford. In 1875 he was made Vicar General of the Diocese of Waterford. He was appointed Parish Priest of Dungarvan on the 13th of February 1876. He left Dungarvan for Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where Bishop Cleary stood out as one of the great intellects of his time. He died on 24th February 1889 and was buried in Saint James Memorial Chapel, Kingston.
